FAQ - Snowshoeing

Do I need prior snowshoeing experience?

No prior experience is needed! Snowshoeing is easy to learn and suitable for all skill levels. We’ll provide a quick lesson and guide you every step of the way.

How physically demanding is snowshoeing?

The level of difficulty depends on the chosen route. We offer tailored trips ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes. Let me know your fitness level, and we’ll plan accordingly.

What kind of shoes should I be wearing with the snowshoes?

Winter boots high enough to let in all the snow are the best.

What to wear for snowshoeing?

Snowshoeing is an activity that can make you break a sweat. Layers play a key role in winter dressing. Check the weather and temperature and adjust the layers accordingly, as the winter temperatures in Lapland can be anything from 0 to -30.

Base layer: Choose a breathable, moisture-wicking material such as merino wool or a technical fabric designed for sports.
Mid-layer: Opt for fleece, merino fleece, or thin wool for insulation.
Top layer: A wind-stopper, soft-shell, or hard-shell as an outer layer works well, as long as you have enough layers underneath. If you’re wearing an insulated ski jacket and pants, a mid-layer might not be needed.

Can children join a snowshoeing trip? Is there an age limit?

Yes, children who can walk on uneven surfaces, can also do snowshoeing. We have snowshoes for every fit. We also have head lamps which children usually find very exciting to use when the natural light starts dimming in the afternoon.
We can also bring a sledge for children in case walking gets too tiring for them.

What if the weather is bad?

In Finland, we say there is no bad weather, just bad clothing. Jokes aside, sometimes the arctic conditions might get too rough, so we always keep an eye on the weather conditions. If the temperature drops below -25°C we will be in contact with you and discuss the situation. The cold temperatures alone are not necessarily a deal breaker, but we will take the wind into account as well. If we come to a conclusion that it is not safe to do the trip due to weather conditions, we will make a full refund.
